A Polk County sheriff's deputy was arrested after allegedly showing a Glock handgun and threatening to kill his wife on Christmas, according to an Altoona police report. Deputy John Negrete, 41, allegedly threatened to kill Tricia Negrete around 10:20 p.m. Friday at their Altoona home, the report said. Tricia Negrete requested a no-contact order, according to police. The details contained in the police report were made available Sunday. John Negrete was booked at the Polk County Jail at 12:06 a.m. Saturday on charges of domestic assault with intent to commit injury and first-degree harassment, said Deputy Jana Rooker, a spokeswoman for the Polk County sheriff's office. Both are aggravated misdemeanors, punishable by a maximum of two years in prison and a $6,250 fine. Negrete was placed on paid administrative leave while the sheriff's office investigates the incident internally... He is free on $4,000 bond, Rooker said. A woman who answered the phone at the Negrete household declined to comment Sunday. [LINK]

[Excerpts] The Polk County sheriff's office is awaiting results of an internal investigation before taking further action following the arrest of one of its deputies on charges of domestic assault with intent to commit injury and first-degree harassment. Sheriff's spokesman Keith Onley was not able to say when the investigation would conclude. Deputy John Negrete, 41, was put on paid leave after his arrest. He was arrested for allegedly showing a handgun to his wife on Christmas and then threatening to kill her... Iowa law states that the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council must strip an officer of his certification if he is convicted of domestic abuse or any felony or for selling or manufacturing illegal drugs. Iowa law also says decertified officers cannot be rehired here. Tricia Negrete requested a no-contact order, police said... He is free on $4,000 bond, officials said earlier. "We are going to wait for the office of professional standards - our internal affairs unit - to gather all the facts first and then go from there," Onley said. "No other action will be taken until that investigation is complete." [Full article here]
