[Excerpts] A Huntington Beach police officer who had been placed on paid administrative leave has pleaded not guilty to charges of physically abusing his former wife and a girlfriend. James Roberts III, 33, was arrested Sept. 2 and charged with physically abusing both his former wife, Shannon Roberts, and a girlfriend. James Roberts is charged with 17 felony counts of false imprisonment, threats, domestic battery, aggravated assault, dissuading a witness by force or threat, and vandalism. “James denies the allegations and there is substantial evidence that she is motivated by money and spite,” defense attorney John Barnett told the Register about Roberts’ former wife... A pretrial hearing is slated for Nov. 23... After Shannon Roberts contacted the Police Department, Small turned the case over to the Sheriff’s Department and asked it to complete a criminal investigation. An internal city investigation was stalled until about two weeks ago, when the Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney’s Office said the Huntington Beach department could move forward... The investigation is divided into two parts – one for James Roberts and one for the police officers who Shannon Roberts said were involved.
