POLICE OFFICER CHARGED IN DOMESTIC ASSAULT

Newport News - A sergeant with the Newport News Police Department was charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic assault on Monday morning after an apparent altercation with her husband. Bernadette Schraudt, 42, was arrested at her home shortly after 6 a.m. Monday. Police spokesman Lou Thurston said the incident involved "an assault on her spouse." Thurston said no one involved in the incident required medical attention. Thurston said Schraudt, in her 11th year with the police force, was booked and released on bond. He said Schraudt has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident. [LINK]

[Excerpts] A police sergeant is charged with trying to dragging her husband out of his car and scratching him with car keys... Officers wrote that Sgt. Bernadette Schraudt, 42, declined to say what happened and was "argumentative." Her husband, a city homicide detective, said he never wanted police involved, but neighbors called... "She is a good person, a good worker and a good mom," Det. Adrien Schraudt said Tuesday. "She is having some hard problems at home, and I think they just pushed her over the edge"... Officers sent to the Schraudts' home Monday morning rang the doorbell several times without answer, the report shows. Finally, according to an officer's notes, "Mr. Schraudt came to the door. He had no shirt on. I noticed multiple scratches and scrapes on his left shoulder and upper back... Adrien Schraudt said the couple was "preparing to separate"... "He stated that she came over and began to argue," the officers wrote. "He got into the car and she tried to pull him out - and scratched him with keys. She remained argumentative with officers." Court records show a magistrate issued a protective order barring Sgt. Schaudt from contacting her husband, and released her on $1,000 bond. She is next due in court March 25... [Full article here]
