  1. He slices cop with ice pick Jealous rage in B'klyn; [SPORTS FINAL Edition]
KERRY BURKE, JONATHAN LEMIRE and TRACY CONNOR DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS. New York Daily News. New York, N.Y.: Jul 18, 2004. pg. 4

A BROOKLYN MAN WITH AN ICE PICK in his fist and jealousy in his heart repeatedly slashed his girlfriend - an off-duty NYPD detective - and then threatened to kill himself yesterday.

After a tense 90-minute standoff, officers stormed the basement apartment where the distraught suspect, Gerard Emer, 40, was barricaded and found him holding the pick to his neck.

While Emer was being subdued and arrested, the cop, whose name was not released, was being treated for her wounds at Lutheran Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition there last night. Cops said she had been slashed with a box cutter.

"They have a history of domestic violence," one investigator said of the couple. "This was just another chapter."

The trouble erupted about 3:45 p.m. when the detective, who works in Queens, arrived at Emer's apartment on 40th St. in Sunset Park to drop off their 14-year-old son.

Minutes later, she came running out of the house, dripping blood and pleading for help.

"He tried to kill me. He's got a knife. Call the cops," she told neighbor Carlos Rodriguez, collapsing on the sidewalk.

Rodriguez, 27, a truck driver, said he yelled to his sister to call 911, then gave the woman some water and started to tend to the cuts across her back.

Meanwhile, an enraged Emer charged out of the apartment and told Rodriguez to stop helping the fallen cop.

"He was screaming to me, 'She played me with another guy! She played me!' " Rodriguez said.

Another witness said he heard Emer shout, "I paid for your vacation and you took someone else."

Rodriguez and other neighbors stayed with the woman until police arrived. The boyfriend went back inside.

After Emer refused to surrender, cops began negotiating with him, police officials said.

When the possibility he might commit suicide emerged, Emergency Service Unit cops swarmed in and nabbed him, authorities said.

After Emer was arrested, he asked to see his son, and the 14- year-old boy was brought down the block to the house, witnesses said.

"The little boy was crying, and then the cops brought the guy out of the house," said Rodriguez's sister, Martina Taveras.

"It was really sad," she said.

Emer was also taken to Lutheran but was being transferred to Kings County Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, police said. He was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.
